excerpt:
The province’s illegal gambling unit hit the jackpot when they raided four alleged gaming houses over the weekend, netting 47 people — including two minors.
Although the simultaneous raids folded four operations, Toronto Police Det. Emilio DiPoce said the Friday night raids just scratch the surface of the GTA’s illegal poker games that generate millions for operators.
And making the cops job tougher is the popularity of televised poker games which drives the underground industry.
At 11 p.m., around 40 Toronto Police, OPP and Durham Regional Police officers swarmed alleged gambling dens hidden in industrial units on Dufferin St., Chesswood Dr. and on Brock Rd. in Pickering. Officers also raided Garden of Eden, a Steeles Ave. sports bar, which police alleged was operating gambling machines.
Nine people are charged with keeping a common gaming house while 36 people, including two young offenders, are charged with being found in a common gaming house.
