My roommate and myself are looking at the prospect of hosting a home game in VA. However, we are unsure if there is any law against this. We were looking at having a buy-in and all monies would be distributed as prize money therefor we(the house) would not make a dime . However, we also want to have a keg and would like to charge players to drink off of it. Is it legal and if not, what would make the situation legal?

If you are not raking the pot as host then you should be OK. As for charging for the keg, just make sure keep the money separate. Having said all that, some over zealous local commonwealth's attorney could give you a hard time but I seriously doubt it.
If you will send me an e-mail thru this site I will forward you the laws on gambling in Virginia.

And be really, really careful about the keg - not only keep the money completely separate, but also make sure there is no hint of a hidden charge (like forcing everyone to pitch in for the keg or not allowing people to bring their own if they want).

Thank you both for your responses. A thousand thank-you's are beyond well deserved for the efforts of the PPA. Time for congress to wake up and stop trying to babysit Americans. Hopefully in time, poker will be seen as a game of skill. Thanks again.
