Hey Fellas..

Well, Donna at Club Royale has chosen to shut her doors. I am going to assume she did not want to fight the tribe for various reasons.

When they started the Club, she made a crucial mistake, IMO, in not protecting herself by forming an LLC or Corp, so if and when you do get sued, they dont come after everything.. So the Tribe listed all that she owns, her house, tattoo parlors, etc.. She is also in the middle of a divorce and could not get split from Johnny because of the civil suit.. She has been having some fun with the younger guy and he was really pressuring her to get divorced hence was another reason for her decision..

I am hearing of another club(Tucson Card Club) opening up right after Christmas so stay tuned.... From what I understand, this club WILL NOT be associated with Harold Lee.. If anyone wants ANY more info, let me know, I will be happy to give it to you... ;)

Arizona members I had a death in the family recently and have had other things going on and have not really been active the last month but I think we need to meet and get some serious planning done. There are many things going on right now and its not looking good for this game we all love. A quote comes to mind and I am not sure who said it but I think the message is clear enough "the only cure for despair is action". There are elections, candidates and things we need to collect information on and inform others about members and non members alike. We need to set up a committee and work on recruiting members and garnering media attention. I am more than willing to open up my home to a meeting because I really feel like this is a crucial time for poker and definitely not a time to be complacent if you care about this game and your civil rights and liberties concerning it, please let myself or arizonapokerplayer know so we can set up something and why not have a game and some good food as well? I also know a local brew master at one of the Rock bottom Breweries and I'm sure he would give me a friendly discount on a keg of beer as well. I'm willing to make it fun and provide the place if we can get the bodies to one of these meetings. As always we are open to suggestions but we need some motivated bodies to get our state chapter(s) going, our message and our rights to play this game alive and kicking. Anybody else feel this way if so lets take action outside of these blogs and do something.

I have read that the ICGPA members have opened a poker room in Arizona.
What are the legal requirements needed in regards to business licensing? What category would this business fall under if currently this type of activity is considered to be illegal? What other measures would need to be taken at the legal and official level to do this properly?

Thanks for reading and for those who respond!

Some of you have may have read my posts and I just wanted to let everyone know I am Arizona's Assistant State Director. I have been a resident of Arizona for over three years and am very ready to serve the PPA and you all. My name is Charles Marshall but feel free to call me Chuck and if I can help any of you with anything PPA related please do not hesitate to contact me. Steve and I have been working closely on lots of ideas and definitely want to get more meetings going for members, raise our membership here and make an impact on the unclear laws that affect us as poker players and citizens of this great state. We also would like to get a formal committee going and in the future meet with many of our states representatives on the various levels of government. I know I speak for both of us when I say we are open to ideas from all and if anyone wants to get more involved please contact one of us. I look forward to defending the game and helping any of you if I can. Thank you Steve and hope to meet many of you, whom frequent our states forum (lets keep it the busiest!).

Here is an article out of today's AZ Republic that mentions three seats that are likely to be close in November: district 1 (Renzi's vacant seat), district 5 (Mitchell), and district 8 (Giffords). Renzi was anti-poker, so any change will likely be better. Mitchell and Giffords are a little more middle of the road. We'll need to investigate what their opponents think of poker.

Not sure if you are all aware, but Representative Pete Sessions introduced H.R. 6663 on 8/1/08, with the intent of clarifying the UIEGA. Because of the congressional recess, no discussion on the bill will occur until September.

The official PPA stance is to oppose this bill. See: http://pokerplayersalliance.org/press-releases/2008/08/02/press-release-statement-by-ppa-chairman-damato-on-introduction-of-hr-6663/

I will put together a short letter of opposition in the near future that we should send to our congressional representatives prior to September.

Hi all,
Poker Nation was mentioned in the article in the AZ Republic and people have been buzzing about it. Rightly so, I recently bought a house roughly 20 blocks away and decided to go check it out yesterday. First of all the article says E. Greenway not true you will find yourself riding through a residential area on the east side. So if you are going over there make sure your crossroads are W. Greenway and 19th Ave. It is located on the south east corner in the smaller building facing away from 19th Ave. They had a soft opening recently but the big opening is today (thursday 26th). Christine is very nice has a good selection of poker supplies and she even has some people out of store who build tables, nice tables by the way. She has said to me that she will do everything to maintain a fair game. She will have four tables going and she is thinking the 1-2 NL Hold'em game will be the popular game (min. buy in is 50$). She is going to leave that up to us the players. Just so you know you will need to purchase a 20 dollar membership and also be aware there is no rake they do a 2 dollar button. So every time the button comes to you that is two bucks for the house. I personally have never played this way but I do think it is better than having the pot raked. She is going to have four tables going and she is willing to stay open late for the games. I think you will find a nice atmosphere and good people. You will definitely find a poker game if that is what you are looking for so if you are in the area go check it out! I am busy and don't have time to go play today but I will play there very soon and I'll be happy to fill you all in on what games are going to be the norm etc.

Here is a letter that I sent a few months back to Senators McCain and Kyl, as well as representative Ed Pastor (4th district), in whose district I reside. I encourage each one of you to also send a letter to McCain, Kyl and whoever your House representative is. You can find all this information on PPA's homepage and you can ever send an electronic message from that page. It would be great if we could have a voter from each of Arizona's 8 Congressional Districts send a letter to his/her House Rep. so that we cover the entire state. Please respond to this post noting which rep you sent a letter to.

Please feel free to use this as a sample and/or modify to your liking. Most of it was drawn from the talking points on PPA's homepage.

March 24, 2008

Re: Support Online Poker and H.R. 2610

Dear Representative Pastor,

I write to you as the Arizona State Director for the Poker Players Alliance (www.pokerplayersalliance.com), a nonprofit organization comprised of poker players and enthusiasts from around the United States who seek to promote the game of poker, ensure its integrity, and protect the rights of poker players nationwide. I am writing to ask for your support of H.R. 2610, the Skill Game Protection Act.

As an Arizona voter, I can tell you that Arizona poker players were dismayed that legislation targeting online gaming, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (“UIGEA”), was added as Title VIII to the SAFE Port Act (Public Law No. 109-347), at the eleventh hour, with absolutely no debate in either the House or Senate. Arizona voters deserve better.

The true facts make undeniably clear that the online poker ban is bad legislation for America, as prohibitions do not work. Indeed, poker is one of the great American pastimes and has been enjoyed by Presidents (most famously, Richard Nixon), generals, Supreme Court Justices, Members of Congress, and other Americans for more than 150 years. The UIGEA merely drove poker players underground and did nothing to stem the growing popularity of the game nationwide, nor to track down terrorist financing, prevent underage gambling, or help problem gamblers.

Poker is not gambling because it is a game dominated by skill. Unlike state lotteries, blackjack, or roulette, poker is a “thinking man’s” game that requires the skills of mathematics, psychology, and money management. In this way, poker is more akin to backgammon or chess than to traditional forms of gambling. In poker, players do not compete against the casino. Instead, they match their skills against other poker players. The fact that the UIGEA permits individuals to gamble online for horse races, fantasy sports, and state lotteries illustrates the hypocrisy of the law.

Poker is also a tremendous source of charity. In 2006, for example, millions of dollars were raised for local and national charities through poker tournaments. One event in D.C. featured 15 Members of Congress and raised more than $288,000 to fight cancer. In the last few years, I have participated in charity poker tournaments in Phoenix that have benefited the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation, The Foundation For Senior Living, and Make a Difference.

Banning online poker results in the loss of billions of dollars in tax revenue. According to a recent economic analysis, $3.3 billion in federal tax revenue and $1 billion in state tax revenue could be raised if the federal government were to regulate internet poker instead of pushing it underground. Think of all the good that could result from that extra tax revenue, especially in these troubled economic times! As it now stands, tax revenue from American poker players is going to other countries.

Recent polls reveal that 75% of Americans oppose banning online poker. I, too, as well as many other Arizona poker players, oppose the government’s attempt to take away my right to play poker on the internet. It’s un-American, as I should be able to play online poker in the privacy of my own home, without undue intrusion by the government.

H.R. 2610 remedies the problems with the UIGEA because it clarifies the existing law by rightfully providing the same treatment to poker and other games of skill that horse racing and lotteries receive under the UIGEA. Equally as important, H.R. 2610 clarifies the outdated Wire Act of 1961 by codifying the 5th Circuit’s ruling in November 2002, known as “MasterCard Re:,” which says the law is limited to “gambling on sporting events or contests,” not games of skill.

In addition, H.R. 2610 requires websites to use the most technologically advanced age verification procedures and abide by monetary controls to detect and stop money laundering activities.

Thank you for your consideration of these most important issues and I look forward to your support of H.R. 2610.

Very truly yours,

Steven J. Yeager

Shadegg, John [R-AZ]
Rep. Shadegg is F rated in my Congressional guide, as he cosponsored both HR 4411 and HR 4777. Shadegg announced that he would not be a candidate for reelection. However, ten days later, he announced that he would seek reelection. The Democratic nominee, tax attorney Bob Lord, outraised Shadegg in the first quarter of 2007 and has more cash on hand than Shadegg. Independent candidate Annie Loyd and Libertarian Michael Shoen are also running.
