This past Friday, Professor Ben van der Genugten, an expert in probability and mathematical statistics, challenged the Dutch Supreme Court’s classification of poker as a game of chance, citing how a formula he co-developed and is used by the courts pegs poker at a higher skill level than most fantasy sports, which the court rules are a game of skill. Because of this inconsistency, the Professor is calling for the court to revoke the classification of poker as a game of chance.

Anyone who says that the internet gambling boom in the United States is subsiding would be stating the exact opposite of a recent report issued by comScore Media Metrix. The company, which “is a global Internet information provider to which leading companies turn for consumer behavior insight that drives successful marketing, sales and trading strategies,” according to its website, released a summary of July’s online traffic in the United States. Glancing down the list of “Top 10 Gaining Categories by Percentage Change in Unique Visitors (U.S.),” you’ll notice “Online Gambling,” which ranks as number seven on the list. All in all, the number of unique visitors who visited internet gambling sites increased by 5% from June to July, 2008.

Normally, the most vociferous calls for legalizing Internet gaming come from the growing online poker-playing community, offshore gambling site operators, civil libertarians and a handful of select members of Congress.

Add UNLV associate professor Kathryn LaTour to the chorus.

LaTour, who teaches in the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration, has co-authored a study that says the legalization and regulation of online gambling in the United States and Canada could help reduce some of the activity’s harm. Gambling addiction, she said, could be curtailed while regulation would keep underage gamblers out of the virtual casinos.

EDMONTON - A computer created by a group of U of A programmers changed the face of poker on Sunday night, when it defeated some of the best players in the world.

In the second man-versus-machine competition held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas over the weekend, Polaris II narrowly defeated seven players from the online poker training site stoxpoker.com.

It is generally supposed that the more gambling opportunities are around, the more problem gamblers there will be. This is often said to be the main reason why most people in democracies think that although some gambling should be allowed, it should be carefully restricted.

Most people that visit casinos or use other forms of gambling such as the lottery or online casinos do it strictly for recreational purposes. However, about 3-5 percent of the world’s population gambles excessively, to the point that it damages their lives. According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, 4-6 million Americans are considered problem gamblers, and 2 million (1 percent of the US population) are diagnosed as pathological gamblers.

prohibition, highlighting a new survey by ICR market research that
