Anyone who says that the internet gambling boom in the United States is subsiding would be stating the exact opposite of a recent report issued by comScore Media Metrix. The company, which “is a global Internet information provider to which leading companies turn for consumer behavior insight that drives successful marketing, sales and trading strategies,” according to its website, released a summary of July’s online traffic in the United States. Glancing down the list of “Top 10 Gaining Categories by Percentage Change in Unique Visitors (U.S.),” you’ll notice “Online Gambling,” which ranks as number seven on the list. All in all, the number of unique visitors who visited internet gambling sites increased by 5% from June to July, 2008.

The AGA, which is headquartered in Washington, D.C., launched the 11th annual Responsible Gaming Education Week (RGEW), which takes place between now and Friday, August 8th. Surprisingly, there are striking similarities between successful fund managers and professional poker players.
Competition poker has become the latest global craze — the surge in popularity coincides with the advent of the lipstick camera, which allows viewers at home to see the cards of the players as the hands unfold. This, as well as the remarkable sums of money at stake, has made poker a popular spectator sport.

Jarrod Musano’s passion for poker doesn’t prevent him from playing the game he dearly loves just because he’s deaf.
His inability to hear what’s going on at the table is a challenge, but that hasn’t discouraged him and other deaf and hearing impaired persons from pursing opportunities for the chance to compete against the best players in the world.

Lawmakers from across the suburbs, and across the aisle, reacted to the series by saying the state should do more to keep an eye on the casino industry and provide help for gambling addicts.
“It is shameful,” said state Sen. Kirk Dillard, a Hinsdale Republican. “If we are raking in billions of dollars in revenue from compulsive gambling, we need to take care of those people who need our help.”

Regardless, this is the first time that Polaris has bested human opponents of that caliber. The AI team behind Polaris made it tougher to beat by having the program change it’s play at certain points in the match. This helped plug a hole in one of the weaknesses previous opponents had exploited. They also had the program analyze how it could have played the hand differently to get a different outcome. This helped it learn from mistakes and constantly adjust to the conditions of the game.

The 39th World Series of Poker got going in earnest Friday, and perhaps the most common question pondered about the game is this:
Luck or skill, which is it? The obvious answer, of course, is:
Both.
